Zwei gegensätzliche Erzählungen Thomas Manns fasst dieser Band zusammen: 'Tonio Kröger', eine "Prosa-Ballade" aus dem Jahre 1903, die die "intellektuelle und radikale Jugend, die den Radikalismus damals freilich noch nicht politisch meinte", als "ihr gemäß" "ergriff", und 'Mario und der Zauberer' aus dem Jahre 1930, "eine stark ins Politische hinüberspielende Geschichte, die mit der Psychologie des Faschismus - und derjenigen der 'Freiheit', ihrer Willenslehre, die sie gegen den robusten Willen des Gegners so sehr in Nachteil setzt, innerlich beschäftigt ist". Damit ist Möglichkeit gegeben, sich beispielhaft mit dem Phänomen Literatur auseinanderzusetzen und zu erkennen, dass nicht die äußere Handlung, sondern Ansatz, Entwicklung und Durchführung eines Themas - bei Thomas Mann fast immer durch persönliche Distanz und vor allem durch skeptische Ironie geprägt - entscheidende Kriterien zu ihrer Interpretation sind.
